Safari Tents
Safari tents originated in African game-reserve lodges and have been adapted for North American glamping with significantly more amenities than their original counterparts. The basic shape is rectangular — heavy canvas walls stretched over a wood frame — with a wooden floor, real beds (often king-size), full lighting, and frequently an attached private bathroom inside the structure or in a small adjoining annex. What separates a safari tent from a bell tent or a basic canvas tent is the construction quality. Safari tents have ridge beams, multiple zip-down windows, mosquito netting on every opening, and weather-resistant canvas treated for waterproofing. The interior often feels more like a lodge room than a tent — hardwood floors, area rugs, real furniture, and proper lighting. Most safari-tent rentals are platform-mounted (wooden deck floor, often elevated 1-3 feet off the ground) and include either a private bathroom inside the structure or a separate "bath house" cabin a few yards away. The luxury versions add wood stoves, free-standing tubs, and outdoor showers. Climate considerations: canvas walls breathe, so safari tents handle heat better than RV trailers. They handle cold less well than insulated cabins. Most operators are seasonal in cold-climate states, with operations from May to October. In Arizona, Florida, and Texas, year-round operations are common. Best for: couples and small families who want the canvas-tent aesthetic with hotel-room amenities. Honeymooners, anniversary trips, and Instagram-photographed weekends. Browse every safari tent rental we've indexed below.
