Primitive Camping
Primitive camping is the simplest and cheapest form of outdoor lodging — no hookups, no amenities, often no facilities beyond a designated patch of ground and (sometimes) a fire ring. You bring everything: tent, sleeping pad, water, food, and a way to deal with waste. Sites range in style from genuinely backcountry — a numbered patch in a national forest, accessed by a 2-mile hike, with a single fire ring and nothing else — to "primitive" in name only — a designated patch at a campground that just doesn't have water and electric, with a bathhouse a few hundred yards away. The first style is for experienced campers who know how to handle a no-water-source overnight. The second is for beginners testing the format on a forgiving site. Cost is the appeal. Most primitive sites are $0-15/night. Many federal and state forest sites are first-come, first-served and operate on a self-pay drop-box system. Reservation systems are spreading but coverage is uneven. What you'll want to know before you book: water source (carry-in or on-site spigot), bathroom situation (vault toilet, pit toilet, none), bear regulations (food storage requirements), fire regulations (fire ring, no fires, propane only), and whether the site has any kind of cell signal. The latter matters if you're traveling alone. Best for: experienced campers, budget travelers, and anyone who wants the deepest version of "away from it all." Worst for: first-time campers, anyone who needs a bathroom inside the tent, anyone who hasn't checked the weather forecast. Browse every primitive site we've indexed below.
