About Stone Soup Desert Views

Back to basics with endless desert sky. Hike giant rock sculptures, gather petrified wood, maybe find the hidden pond or seasonal Little Colorado to splash in . Bathed in the Canyon's ethereal ambiance, powdery views of Navajo Plateau and snowy San Francisco Peaks await. This is “Stone Soup,” in honor of unique geology and a folktale where everyone brings something to make a whole greater than its parts. A hut, built with love during musical campouts, materials are recycled from building sites may be available, on a first-come first serve basis, but please don't count on anything being there but the open land and sky. There are 40 acres to explore and camp on. You can follow the property boundaries, or just head straight out from the hut away from the road or on the other side of the road for at least half a mile and camp anywhere. You can drive all over the land in a regular vehicle and find your spot. If you do use the hut, please leave it in better shape than you found it. Same with the land. Here is my vision: Adventurous, creative, nature-loving kindred souls can converge on these 40 acres and bring what they need but also share with one another (the stone soup spirit). Although you do need to take in and out everything (water, food, bedding...) and there is no outhouse at the moment (dunes for some privacy, and thinly bury your waste), you can drive anywhere on the land and have what you need in your vehicle. It sometimes gets windy, so car-camping is recommended over tents, though you can also bring your RV. Basically at the moment, this is an isolated, wild campsite, with total peace and quiet but where you bring everything. There is no running water, cooking supplies, or toilet. You may find firewood further down the road, and can have a fire anytime, but nothing is supplied. You will need to take your trash with you. The photos are not up to date and still show amenities that are not there. The hut may be available, but it is just a structure with no door. Also note that there is no way to get there with Google maps/ GPS coordinate. I will send detailed directions if you book, but you probably want to arrive with some daylight. If prepared to rough it, it's a gorgeous site with open sky, amazing views, stars, rocks, and silence.

It is very peaceful and quiet. Kate was very responsive and helpful because the directions as specific to the remote location. It is within an hour to Grand Canyon visitor center. However, if you have a bad back, are afraid of heights, or not petite, this may not be the site for you. Absolute must to get there before sundown because the site is somewhat hidden. While basic necessities are provided for, we recommend additional sleeping comfort items. The bathroom is rudimentary, so prepare for that.

Amazing little home in the middle of the desert. Very basic off grid set up but was comfy for our off grid crew. Be careful coming into the property as you go through native land. They can be a little not kind. We enjoyed rock searching and just chilling. Our dogs loved running the giant sand dunes that hide the home. It was great. We almost turned around at a weird windmill thing but keep going your almost there after you get through the next fence. 😊

The views at Stone Soup were gorgeous -- both the surrounding dunes during the day, and the incredibly clear view of the stars at night. Kate was also a great host and gave us great directions and timely updates on the site. I would recommend a high clearance vehicle -- the dirt roads leading to the site scraped the bottom of our sedan a few times. The shelter keeps the wind out, but with no heat definitely bring warm bedding! But all in all, we loved the privacy and beauty of Stone Soup. Would definitely recommend for an off-grid experience near the Grand Canyon!

I cannot recommend this Hipcamp as we were unable to find it, given the bare bones directions provided by the host. There were a few important landmarks along this dirt road that would’ve been helpful but we’re not mentioned in the directions.

The site was remote, the kids loved wondering the dunes and nearby rock formations. The night sky was brilliant. Bring a UV light and look for glow in the dark scorpions.

Listen. I’ll be frank. The land is incredible, hallowed ancient dunes. It resembles the surface of the moon! Absolutely stunning and still. But.. getting there is no joke, and the host’s directions are over complicated. It’s very far from the main road (good, quiet).. However, it’s an odyssey getting to the site. 8 miles down a bumpy road. And I drive a truck.. High clearance vehicle is a must. Secondly, the shed has serious meth shack vibes. Now, I understand desert weather is hard on camps and upkeep is tedious if not constant just to make things pleasant & reassuring for each new visitor. E…
