About Little Cabin Under Big Stars

A simple place under big skies. This tiny off-grid cabin sits on our working homestead, where woods and a small creek edge the land. You’ll hear chickens/geese in the morning and may spot the mule and goats moving through their day. We are a veteran family living simply off the grid. (We were also featured on Homestead Rescue—a past chapter of our journey.) also offering long fermented homemade organic sourdough breads, bagels, pizzas and more upon order. Must have 2 days advance for orders. The cabin is minimal and intentional: • Loft bed • chair • double-burner stove (coffee & tea included) • Dry sink • Separating composting toilet Loft Access: The sleeping loft is accessed via a custom-built rebar and timber ladder. Please note that this requires a moderate level of agility and "vertical climbing." For your safety, only the black rebar rungs are weight-bearing. The wooden gate and the ski at the top left are decorative barriers and should not be used as handrails or for support. Solar power provides light and a place to charge your phone. This is a dry cabin—no running water. The composting toilet is clean, simple, and part of the off-grid experience. Guests are responsible for its care during their stay, and we’ll show you exactly how to use and maintain it with ease. Come here to slow down. Try tiny living. Take care of your own space and settle into a simpler rhythm. Nearby: • Mountain trails in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains • Soaking at Valley View Hot Springs • Views of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve right from the land Best for one person seeking quiet. Step outside at night—the stars do the rest.

I would highly recommend Serene Desert, Mountains & Horses! The location was quiet, under open sky, and great for star gazing at night. The hosts, and their dog Beethoven, were very welcoming and they were knowledgeable of the area. We also took their Mustang tour, which we enjoyed immensely. Be sure to bring extra apples and carrots for Scooby and Atlas, the therapy horses on site. Thank you for making our camping trip so enjoyable!

Great place to stay. We ended up booking half an hour before we needed a place to stay and the hosts were so welcoming and friendly.

Had a great time while visiting the sand dunes last minute on a holiday weekend, thanks to our hosts. The property was beautiful, with amazing views of mountains and stars as far as the eye can see. We got to pet the horses, and boy oh boy were they cute and friendly! It is a perfect place to camp for those who prefer a break from the busy campgrounds. The hosts themselves, were great! They answered all questions and seemed more than willing to help. We are thankful they share their space.

We stayed here after a day at the Sand Dunes. It was absolutely perfect, and the views were beautiful. Ela was so helpful, ensuring we had firewood and easy access to the campsite. She even let us borrow her cooking grate for the night. The horses are very sweet, we loved saying hello to them. We ended up meeting Drew in the morning, and he was incredibly friendly and nice to talk to! We wouldn’t hesitate to come back.

The views were incredible and it was so nice to have a fire pit and outhouse. Thank you also for letting us say hi to the horses many times. The fire pit is a bit of a 4-wheel drive from road so it was a bit of work to unload and in unwieldy drive to park the car to protect ourselves from the wind.

Serene Desert offers amazing views, a quiet location, and friendly hosts. Our kindergartener loved feeding apples to the horses, and the hosts' dog Beethoven was adorable and sweet. He was a little rambunctious for a small child unused to big dogs, but he was well-behaved and we adults loved him. We were the only guests the week we were there, and appreciated access to firewood and the composting toilet. The camp is within a reasonable drive of the Sand Dunes, several hot springs, Fort Garland, San Luis, and Blanca. We hope to return!
