Wonderful rebuilt example of a frontier logistics depot. Kinda challenges what you'd expect of a "fort" but is one of the only examples of a behind the front line fortification I've ever been to. And the Market Fair is absolutely not to be missed!
We were there for the market fair, but the volunteer at the fort (Dennis, maybe?) was hands down the best ambassador possible. He made the history come alive, and honestly we could have stayed all day just talking to him (my husband would have, if given the chance). It's so wonderful and important to have people like that who can elevate the experience to something that leaves you thinking long into the drive home.
Fort Frederick is a lovely site with a historic stone fort and reconstructed barracks surrounded by green fields and woods. During the late April Colonial Market Fair hundreds of reenactors pitch canvas tents and live as people did in the 1700's. There are a large number of vendors of handmade historical goods and some antiques, including black powder weapons, iron tools, woodwork, textiles, and clothing.
