EV Camping in the Cold: What Winter Does to Your Range (and Your Night)
I slept in my Tesla at 14°F. That was the mistake.

Why Camp Mode Fails You in the Cold
Camp Mode is built for mild nights. It keeps accessories on, runs the HVAC, holds a temperature. But in sub-freezing weather, it fights for your comfort—not efficiency.
- It never stops fighting. The heater runs constantly, losing to heat loss through windows and insulation. Even with a heat pump, you’re losing.
- It doesn’t know you have a bag. Dress for winter camping—0°F sleeping bag—and you can set the thermostat to 55°F. Huge savings. Most people default to 68°F.
- The battery is cold. Once the pack chills, that trapped energy is gone. Preheating while plugged in helps.
My mistake? I assumed Camp Mode was magic. It’s not. It’s a feature for summer music festivals.
The Heated Cabin Wins in January
After that disaster, I changed strategy. Now I exclusively book sites with electric hookups—or better, actual cabins with full power.
A heated cabin changes everything. No range anxiety. No frozen toes. You plug in the car (often at 50 amps) and use a space heater. Many glamping cabins offer:

- Propane or wood stoves for cozy heat
- Thick walls and real insulation

If you insist on sleeping in your EV in the cold, follow these rules:
