What to know

  • Ferry reservations to San Juan Islands fill 3+ months ahead in summer. Book early.
  • Olympic Peninsula has loop and out-and-back routes — Hwy 101 is your spine.
  • Methow Valley is at 1,800–4,000 ft; cooler than Cascade west side.
  • Cell service drops fast in Olympic Peninsula valleys.

Rain situation?

West of the Cascades it rains a lot, especially Oct–April. Olympic rainforests get 130+ inches/year. June–August is the drier window. East of the Cascades stays much drier year-round.

Best month?

Late June through September for everything. May is risky west of Cascades.

Family-friendly?

Yes, especially cabin properties on Hood Canal, Whidbey Island, San Juans, Lake Chelan.
