Best glamping in Tennessee: Smokies, plateaus, and river valleys
Tennessee glamping is dominated in volume by the Smokies, but the state has four distinct regions, and three of them are far less crowded.
The Smokies (Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Townsend, Sevierville)
The largest concentration of cabins in the eastern US. Hot tubs, mountain views, and proximity to the most-visited national park in the country. Townsend — the “peaceful side” — trades attractions for quiet.

The Cumberland Plateau (Crossville, Fall Creek Falls)
A high tableland of gorges, waterfalls, and hardwood forest. Fall Creek Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern US. Cabins and yurts here are cheaper and far quieter than the Smokies.
The Cherokee National Forest (the far east)
The long forested spine along the North Carolina border — whitewater rivers, the Appalachian Trail, and remote cabins. The Ocoee and Nolichucky rivers anchor it.

Middle Tennessee (Nashville hinterland, the Highland Rim)
Rolling hills, river bends, and farm country within reach of Nashville. Cabins, A-frames, and treehouses on quiet rural land — a weekend escape from the city.
Format breakdown
Cabins — overwhelmingly dominant, especially in the Smokies.
Treehouses — a small but distinctive cluster in the eastern hills.
Yurts + A-frames — Cumberland Plateau and Middle Tennessee.
Safari tents — scattered, growing near Nashville.
When to go
| Region | Best months | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Smokies | Apr–June, Sept–Nov | October foliage = peak crowds + rates |
| Cumberland Plateau | Apr–Nov | Hot, humid midsummer |
| Cherokee forest | May–Oct | Remote — stock up before you arrive |
| Middle Tennessee | Apr–June, Sept–Nov | Humid summers |
What to know
- The Smokies are humid and frequently misty — the “smoke” is real. Pack rain layers spring through fall.
- October in the Smokies is the single most-booked window in the state. Reserve 4+ months ahead or pick the Plateau instead.
- Many Smoky Mountain cabins advertise “mountain views” — confirm with recent reviews; some views are of the next cabin.
- Cell service drops fast in the Cherokee forest and on the Plateau’s gorge rims.
Frequently asked questions
Best Tennessee glamping region?
The Smokies (Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Townsend) have the deepest cabin inventory. But the Cumberland Plateau, the Cherokee National Forest, and the Middle Tennessee hills are quieter and often better value.
Best season?
April–June and September–November. October foliage in the Smokies is spectacular but very crowded. Summer is humid; winter is mild and cheap.
Is Gatlinburg too touristy?
The town is. But cabin properties in the hills above it — and especially toward Townsend, the 'quiet side' — keep the Smoky Mountain setting without the strip.
