When to leave NYC

Friday afternoon traffic on the Tappan Zee, I-87, and I-78 is brutal. Best windows:

  • Friday before 1pm, or after 9pm
  • Saturday morning (smoother)
  • Thursday afternoon (best of all — full weekend, no traffic)

Return Sunday before 2pm or after 8pm. Monday morning works if you can take it.

Things to know

  • Cell service drops fast in the Catskills west of Phoenicia. Download maps.
  • Many properties require minimum-night stays (often 2 on weekends).
  • Foliage week books out 3-6 months ahead. Mid-week is much more available.
  • The “tick season” is real April-October; check yourself.
