When to leave NYC
Friday afternoon traffic on the Tappan Zee, I-87, and I-78 is brutal. Best windows:
- Friday before 1pm, or after 9pm
- Saturday morning (smoother)
- Thursday afternoon (best of all — full weekend, no traffic)
Return Sunday before 2pm or after 8pm. Monday morning works if you can take it.
Things to know
- Cell service drops fast in the Catskills west of Phoenicia. Download maps.
- Many properties require minimum-night stays (often 2 on weekends).
- Foliage week books out 3-6 months ahead. Mid-week is much more available.
- The “tick season” is real April-October; check yourself.
Frequently asked questions
How far from NYC for a real glamping weekend?
2-3 hours is the sweet spot. Closer (90 min) means more suburbs, less wilderness. Further (4+ hours) eats too much of a weekend.
Best months from NYC?
Mid-September through October for foliage. May-June for spring + swimming holes. November-March is the value season — same property, 40% off.
Do you need a car?
For 95% of properties, yes. A few are reachable by Amtrak (Hudson, Beacon, Kingston) but most require a 30-min drive from the station. Some operators offer pickup.
Pet-friendly options?
Plenty. About 40% of NYC-area glamping accepts dogs.
